L & L ISLAND TIME, LLC

We have many feathered Friends and Furry four legged ones.

We really enjoy the squirrels we have around and many have become quite tame.   I know

many of you are probably trying to keep the squirels out of your bird feeders but we've

taken the opposite approach.    Here's a Squirrel Feeder that keeps the birds out.    The

recommended and favorite food is raw peanuts.    Yes, you can buy raw peanuts at the

local Pet Supply but if you have an old fashioned 'Feed Store'  (any of you old farmers or

farm kids know what I mean) of any sort you can usually buy them much cheaper.   They

may only come in a larger size bag but if kept in a sealed container they keep well.

This is really fun to watch.  They learn quickly.  Just prop the lid open with a peanut.

They will easily figure out how to push up the lid and go in a get a peanut after they

take that one.   Some take a little longer to figure it out than others but it usually

doesn't take any of them very long.    They can see them through the plexiglass front

but have to lift the lid to get them.

And listen at night!   We knew squirels only forage in daylight, yet any peanuts left in

the feeder at night would be gone in the morning.  Then we heard the lid banging after

dark.  Going out with a flashlight, we thoroughly expected the culprit to be a racoon.

Imagine our surprise to find flying squirrels visiting at night.  They are totally nocturnal,

smaller than regular squirrels, and love peanuts just as much!   They don't really 'Fly'

but they are so good at gliding they appear to fly.   They have white undersides and

are as cute as they can be.

Now don't think we shortchange our feathered freinds.  We do our best to attract all

kinds of birds and provide several kinds of birdhouses around our place.    Most have

been purchased or have been given to us as gifts.   However,  we make little Wren

houses.  Actually the openings could be enlarged to provide access for slightly bigger

birds also.    Just a little bit of decoration on a rustic house looks great.

All are made of cedar so they withstand the weather very well.
